Oh say can you see! The Star Spangled Banner has been performed at sporting events since 1918 and was designated as the National Anthem in 1931. Now in the Thunder’s 25th anniversary season, the Choir of the Game program gives young vocalists in area schools an opportunity to perform the National Anthem during the pre-game ceremony at each of their 36 home games. Again this year there will be the Fairy House Competition, where the public is invited to build their own fairy house for a chance to win a Botanica membership. JDRF One Walk has a single goal: creating a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D). Roughly 40,000 people are diagnosed with T1D every year. Currently there is no cure and no way to prevent T1D but JDRF is looking to change that. On April 1, 2017, Wichitans will join together to walk and raise money for life-changing research for the millions that are affected by this disease. “Down to the Wire: 24 Hour Film Race”

Down to the Wire (DTTW) is a unique weekend-long event that generates the creation of new and original work and a public exhibit of that work in a span of 48 hours. Starting on Saturday, June 16 at 7:00am, teams of one to fifteen people of all ages and levels of experience have 24 hours to write, produce, shoot, and edit a film that is six minutes or less. Elements such as genre, a character, a line or dialogue, or a local landmark are randomly selected at the beginning of the race and all teams are required to incorporate it in to their film. These films are then juried by a panel that selects the top ten and the race ends with a final showcase on Sunday, June 18 at 7:00pm. The number of people who attend the DTTW Top Ten Showcase and the sheer enthusiasm generated by this annual event demonstrates how proud and supportive Wichita is of its own continuously growing artistic tribe. Special Olympics provides year round athletic and sports training for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. These activities give them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship. Special Olympics Kansas will be hosting the Fall Sports Classic which includes two days of volleyball and bowling competitions in Shawnee, Kansas.
